Evictions have become a growing concern in Canada. Being evicted leaves individuals and households with increased risks of homelessness and carries negative health, social, and economic impacts for both the people being evicted and their communities. Recent Canadian research has shown that evictions are poorly understood, in part because many tenants vacate their units before a formal system can adjudicate their case, and while a significant proportion of no-fault evictions have been documented in some of Canada’s major urban centres, evictions in Quebec remain understudied.

Background
The project aims to produce a portrait of evictions in Montreal from 2016 to 2023 by answering three core questions: What are the temporal and geographic patterns of evictions in Montreal? Which neighbourhoods, building types, and renter demographics face disproportionate risk? Which landlords are driving eviction patterns, and how do they operate?
Methodology
This project links eviction cases, ownership data, and census demographic data to analyze eviction patterns. First, the project conducts a temporal and geographic analysis of evictions in Quebec’s largest city. Second, it determines which neighbourhoods, building types, and renter demographics have been disproportionately at risk of and impacted by evictions since 2016. Third, it presents a landlord-based analysis to identify evictors in Montreal and their eviction patterns. Findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed article, conference presentations (including a BSH workshop), and a press release with the RCLALQ.
Results
Findings from this project are currently in development. Results will be published upon completion of the research.
